As higher education institutions in Taiwan actively promote the “Transnational Higher Education EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) Initiative,” assisting discipline-specific faculty members in balancing subject-matter expertise with effective English instruction has become a key element in higher education transformation.
Session 1 場次一
Interactive EMI Teaching: Formative Assessments and Entry Points That Get Students Talking
Speakers

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 12:00pm-13:30pm
Description
In this workshop, instructors will explore simple ways to make their classes more interactive and student-centered. We will look at how to use formative assessments to check student understanding in real time, and why students often stay silent when asked, “Does anyone have any questions?”
Participants will learn four principles for creating welcoming “entry points” where students can engage: asking focused questions, modeling answers, building questions into lecture slides, and varying response types. Participants will then hear from instructors at Taiwanese universities about how they apply these principles in their own classes, and how working with a Fulbright Taiwan EMI advisor helped them brainstorm and put interactive teaching strategies into practice.
Session 2 場次二
Flipped Classroom
Speakers

Wednesday, December 2, 2026 09:00am-10:30am
Description
In this workshop, we will discuss the concept of “flipping” a class, which is a way to organize the class to improve students’ learning. The main idea is to break the traditional mold where students are passive listeners during lectures. Instead, the lecture time is used for the students to more actively engage with the material. The goal of this workshop is to discuss why you may want to consider flipping your class, how you can do it in practice and which ideas you can adopt incrementally.
Curt Schurgers is a Teaching Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. His focus is on undergraduate course development, active learning/flipped classrooms, engineering pedagogy, and research experiences for undergraduate students. He also serves as the Faculty Director of the Envision Maker Studio and co-directs Engineers for Exploration (E4E), a program in which undergraduates tackle real-world engineering design challenges in exploration and conservation, and create technologies in collaboration with ecologists, archaeologists and other scientists. He received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.
