Recruitment for EMI Professional Development Program
National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) is pleased to announce an upcoming professional development opportunity aimed at increasing the capacity for English Medium Instruction (EMI). This program is designed to enhance the pedagogic skills and critical thinking of university-level instructors through a systematic, research-based approach to teaching and learning.
Participating in the EMI Professional Development Program offers an exceptional opportunity for university instructors. As a participant, you will have the distinct privilege of being taught and observed by esteemed faculty members from Teachers College, Columbia University, one of the world’s leading institutions in the field of education.
Throughout the program, you will engage directly with experts who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in EMI, applied linguistics, and second language pedagogy. These faculty members are not only renowned for their research and contributions to the field but are also deeply committed to fostering educational excellence. Their guidance will provide you with invaluable insights and personalized feedback, enhancing your instructional practices and helping you to implement effective EMI strategies in your classroom.

• Duration: November 2024 – July 2025
• Format: Synchronous online modules, asynchronous discussions, in-person coaching, and fieldwork.
• Capstone Project: Participants will apply their learning through a final project, demonstrating their ability to integrate program content into their instructional practices.
• Fieldwork: Faculty members of Teachers College, Columbia University, will travel to Taipei to engage directly with participants through classroom observations, onsite discussions, and academic roundtables to discuss capstone projects.
• Action Research Approach: This program adopts an action research framework, inviting participants to act as researchers in their own classrooms. You will explore the challenges and changes within your EMI courses, gathering data and reflecting on your practice to make informed improvements.
• Tuition: NT$80,000 (self-funded), with an additional NT$60,000 subsidy provided by the Resource Center for EMI, NTNU.
Participants are expected to commit to approximately 200-220 hours over the course of the program, split evenly between in-class sessions and homework. This includes:
• In-Class Hours: Approximately 100-110 hours, distributed across four modules and additional fieldwork/capstone project activities.
• Homework Hours: An equivalent 100-110 hours, including preparation, assignments, project development, and participation in fieldwork.

This program offers a unique opportunity to:

We are looking for motivated instructors who meet the following criteria:
1. Relevance: Current pre-service or in-service EMI instructors at the university level.
2. Motivation: Strong motivation to participate in professional development in EMI.
3. Recommendation: Applicants must be recommended by their department, college, or school.
4. Commitment: Ability to complete the entire program and apply the learning into EMI teaching, including participation in classroom observations, fieldwork, and action research.
5. English Proficiency: Ability to read academic materials and write reasonably well in English.
Step 1: Review Eligibility Criteria
Before applying, ensure you meet the following criteria:
1. Relevance: You are a current pre-service or in-service EMI instructor at the university level.
2. Motivation: You have demonstrated strong motivation in teaching in English as the medium of instruction (EMI).
3. Recommendation: You have a recommendation from your department, college, or school.
4. Commitment: You can complete the entire program and apply the learning into EMI teaching, including participation in classroom observations, fieldwork, and action research.
5. English Proficiency: You are capable of reading academic materials and writing reasonably well in English.
Step 2: Prepare Your Application
Your application should include the following components:
1. Personal Statement (in a three-minute video):
o Explain your current role and how it relates to EMI.
o Discuss your motivations for participating in the program.
o Provide examples of your motivation in teaching in English, including any innovative practices or contributions you have made.
o Describe your commitment to completing the program and applying your learning to your teaching practice.
2. Recommendation Letter:
o Obtain a recommendation letter from your department, college, or school.
o The letter should address your suitability for the program, including your motivation in EMI teaching, your commitment to professional development, and your potential to apply the program’s learning outcomes in your classroom.
3. English Proficiency Evidence:
o Provide evidence of your English proficiency. This could include:
▪ A brief summary of your academic background and experience in using English for teaching.
▪ Examples of academic materials you have read and written in English.
▪ Any relevant English language test scores, if available.
4. Online Interview:
o Shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in an online interview as part of the final selection process.
o The interview will focus on your EMI teaching practices, your understanding of the program’s objectives, and how you plan to apply the learning outcomes to your teaching.

Step 4: Application Review
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee based on the following criteria:
• Relevance and Experience: How well your current role aligns with EMI and your experience in this area.
• Motivation: Your demonstrated commitment to teaching in English and any innovative practices you’ve implemented.
• Recommendation: The strength of your recommendation letter and its alignment with the program’s goals.
• Commitment: Your ability to complete the program and apply its teachings to your practice, including participation in classroom observations, fieldwork, and action research.
• English Proficiency: Your ability to engage with academic materials in English and communicate effectively.
Step 5: Notification
You will be notified of your application status via rcemi@deps.ntnu.edu.tw. Successful applicants will receive further instructions on program enrollment and orientation.

- EMI Program 需要觀課,是否僅到臺北觀課?
觀課地點不局限於臺北,將根據實際情況安排。課程期間有機會邀請哥倫比亞大學的教師到各縣市進行觀課和教學討論。
課程錄取與公告

我們採用隨到隨審,預計於11月上旬通知錄取結果。
- 學校會收到教師錄取通知嗎?
錄取通知將直接發送給錄取教師,學校將不另行通知。
課程設計與要求
- 課程是否全部在線上進行?
本課程包含線上同步教學、非同步討論及現場指導,參與者需投入約 200 至 220 小時,其中課程學習時間約 100 至 110 小時,其餘為作業準備、研究及考察時間。
- 是否需要進行試教、公開觀課及錄影?
是的,課程強調教學實踐,參與者將需要進行短時間的教學演示、公開課堂觀課,並錄製影片作為課程評估及反思工具。
- 課程是否須前往美國?
本課程無須前往美國,大部分課程將以線上同步授課及線上討論的方式進行。此外,哥倫比亞大學的教師預計於2025年6月至7月期間來臺進行現場指導。
課程費用
- 課程費用 NT$80,000 的繳交時間?
課程費用的繳交安排將於錄取確認後通知,預計於今年 11 月底前完成繳費。
- 有哪些管道可能可以申請課程費用之補助 ?
課程費用的補助申請渠道可能因各校的雙語計畫主責單位而異。建議聯繫各校的雙語推動辦公室、雙語中心,或向參與雙語計畫的學院提出相關申請。
證書
- 是否頒發哥倫比亞大學證書?
是的,完成課程後將獲頒美國哥倫比亞大學與國立臺灣師範大學聯合核發的完課證書。
- 完課後是否頒發結訓證書或認證?
完成所有課程要求的參與者將獲頒完課證書。若參與者完成課程超過三分之二但未達到所有要求,將頒發研習證書。
